Barron River Hotel
In 1887 William Boden opened the Stratford Hotel (Now known as the Barron River Hotel) to serve the many construction workers who were building the Kuranda Range Railway. The Hotel was owned by Goverment Surveyor Thomas Behan, who also owned the Stratford Rice Mill. Kids menus and daily Chef’s specials ensure that everyone will be impressed by both the food and the friendly service. The verandah is just a great place to relax, overlooking the old timber mill and the rail lines where the Kuranda Railway journeys past each day, laden with tourists.

What people are saying...
I stayed in Stratford during a recent business trip. I really enjoyed my evenings at the Barron River Hotel. It's a great place to unwind and enjoy a good meal or cold drink after a days work. I believe you pay $10 for a steak on Tuesdays. That was a bargain, and also delicious!
Apart from the food and location, I found that the staff made a huge difference to the dining experience. They were all naturally friendly (personable) and helpful.
I have mentioned Stratford and The Barron River Hotel to my colleagues.
Stopped here for lunch after a morning fishing, and had two marvelous steak sandwiches and beer battered fries which were excellent and very filling. Staff were very helpful, even offering to replace my beer when they noticed I'd fished a fly out of it whilst sitting on the deck.
Haven't been for ages, but seems to have different staff and refreshed decor from earlier visits, clean, lots of charm, nice deck and resturant area, and good family friendly facilities. Will be going again for a "good feed"
Absolute disaster of a night. Tuesday night specials only 2 out of 5 meals left by 7pm. Took a full hour for meals to arrive - no warning of this at ordering and no apology.
We had to approach staff on three occasions with complaints and the response was they would get the manager, but he never appeared.
Two meals were good but the beef dish was tough and reheated. Staff were lacklustre and uncaring.
Meals were great - and on weeknights they have some good deals going on such as $12 meals sometimes! (might wanna check this - that it wasnt a limited time thing! haha)
The best thing for us was the indoor / outdoor kids playground! Us parents could sit and chat, while the kids were enjoying themselves in the play equipment - behind a safety gate. Was great.
Kids meals are great too - just not sure why they bother giving them a salad?? haha!
Overall - excellent place to dine! Going there again tonight!! haha!
Whilst travelling thru Cairns recently we stopped at The Barron River Hotel for lunch. It is an old world hotel , with lots of character and a touch of history . Its bars boast wood from the sleepers of the original Ghan railway from Alice Springs to Port Augusta.
On our visit , the hotel had recently changed its menu and the staff seemed a little lost when finding our selections on the till.
However the meals were delightfull. The size of each meal seemed to be just right and our selections were cooked to perfection. The barramundi was pure perfection, Whilst we didnt choose it , it appeared that lamb shanks ( a simple dish) was the house specialty as we saw many "locals" opting for this dish.
The staff were very friendly and the ambiance was relaxed and friendly.
Overall a relaxed , friendly country style hotel on the edge of Cairns......with a great food offering.
If in the area I would definitely recommend the Barron River Hotel as a must do experience on your travels.
Have your say...
